blog candy alert

I'm hoping for some crafty time this weekend to participate in Angel's "18 days of Angelosity" and thot you'd be interested in seeing what the blog candy's amounted to so far (here). I've only had time to make a card based on one sketch so far ... more to follow soon!

happy halloween!

Happy Halloween, everyone! This is a card I made at our closest Archiver's last year. I went to a make-'n-take there with a few friends to support the local economy. It was my first time using flocking on a card ... on one of the bats. All supplies were from Archiver's. I like 'em all, and will prob'ly CASE this again some time!

We just returned from trick-or-treating, and am back to enjoy the fruits of our labor! I'm restricting myself to just eating the bite-size milky ways ... the rest go to Geoff, my eldest. This year he decided we should take in a neighbor's haunted house ... make that their haunted garage. They go all out and this year have a chain saw murderer in there capturing unsuspicious people (really, they're other neighbors who join in the fun). Complete with a graveyard leading up the driveway where folkes have to line up to enter (it's getting more popular every year with the locals), some decide right then and there to turn back! This year we'd just entered the garage and made our first turn in a small maze, where Geoff freaked out when a person in a prison reached out, asking him to please help her outta there ... that was enough ... so we had to backtrack outta the place! Maybe next year ...

Innovator of the Year

I've been a fan of Pixar Animation Studios since the early days when they created amazing shorts for use in Sesame Street shows ... you know the mom and kid swing-arm table lamps now made famous as their branding used at the introduction of their movies?
And what movies, you ask?! WELL ... glad you asked:
  • Toy Story (1995)
  • A Bug's Life (1998)
  • Toy Story 2 (1999)
  • Monsters, Inc. (2001)
  • Finding Nemo (2003)
  • The Incredibles (2004)
  • Cars (2006)
  • Ratatouille (2007)
  • WALL-E (2008)

Wowzer, eh?! Snipped from Mike's October 23rd post at The Pixar Blog, "The Hollywood Reporter today named Pixar chief creative officer John Lasseter as its Innovator of the Year for 2008.

Citing his role as a "key player" in the production of Pixar's WALL-E and Disney's Bolt (in theatres Nov. 21), and the studios behind them, the publication concludes the obvious: "Lasseter has become not only the most prominent successor to the Nine Old Men, but arguably the most important figure in animation since [Walt] Disney himself." " (read more here)

blast from the past

I love Halloween! It's ranked right up there after Christmas for my stock of household decorations; I have multiple costumes; it's NOT just for kids in my home! This year I'd made more cards than I actually needed to send ... and ... sigh ... same as last year! Here's one I never posted from last year that's finally getting a new home this year; I've decided it's one of my more "manlier" cards so it's heading to a lunch buddy on Friday morning!

no specific deets; the DP was 2-sided, with the word using (methinks) the opposite side ... either that or we used coordinating papers. all supplies were from a card class at capture-a-memory, link at right ... it's sweet, eh?!

boo to you!

This card went off in the mail today! I'd made it quite a while ago but hadn't uploaded it to my blog, from a shop hop of days gone by. I don't recall now even which shop led us in the making of this card, but IMHO it's STINKIN' CUTE! I'd hung on to it in hopes of using it as personal tutorial of sorts, but having the pic on the blog will suffice!

no specific deets, however - black cardstock, white cheesecloth, cute Halloween stamps, and COURSE I had to grab those purple brads, don't 'cha know?! I used a silver CM/Precious Memories gel pen for the inside greeting

happy holidays

This was my fav of the cards we made at yesterday's Christmas Stamp-a-Stack class at Crystal's (see link at right) house. I'll have to break down to get these couple stamp sets sooner or later - they're just SO STINKIN' CUTE, y'know?! Last year we'd used another in making these cards. When we're making 2 cards of each design I usually make one in each orientation - portrait and landscape.

stamps: SU's Big on Christmas, Christmas Chatter; paper: SU's Certainly Celery, Real Red, Whisper White; ink: StazOn's Jet Black, SU's Certainly Celery, Chocolate Chip, Real Red, Summer Sun?; accessories: SU's Real Red 5/8" and Certainly Celery 1/3" grosgrain ribbons

blog candy alert

FYI - stop by and leave a comment (here) by November 3rd for Lori, of By LORI Designs blog and etsy shop, and you'll have a chance to win a kewl plate similar to the one pictured! Thanx for the chance, Lori, and happy blogaversary; I've got my fingers crossed!

"fall"ing for you

I'd not had the chance to make any sketches 'til today to celebrate the 18 days of Angelosity! Sometimes work and just plain life just gets in the way, y'know?! Well, today's the day ... this is for sketch #1. I'd not yet inked this l'il cutie scarecrow I'd picked up recently from the kind folkes at ShortCuts who've lately been offering entire series of the latest studio g releases. Now, that's my kind of deal ... 20-25 mini stamp sets to a series at $1 ea. This was from their early October offering if I recall correctly; mainly Halloween stamp sets, it also included 4 that were "clearly" Thanksgiving-related. I popped the l'il scarecrow dude up using dimensionals.

My Mom's up visiting and we're getting ready to head out to my fav local Italian restaurant for supper, but I hope to stop by again to post tomorrow! I just rec'd ShortCuts' studio g calendar offering in today's mail! Whoo hoo! Happy to countdown w you, Angel ~ had I told you how glad I am you're holding another countdown?!

stamps: studio g, paper: Graphic45's Botanicabella collection DP, SU's More Mustard, Chocolate Chip cardstocks; inks: StazOn's Jet Black, SU's More Mustard, Ruby Red, Creamy Caramel, and Chocolate Chip, Tri-C watercolor markers

The Stamper (I can relate!)

THE STAMPER by Jackie Saxby 1999

I started out with just one stamp
and when I bought some more
I decided that a shoe box
Would make an ideal store.

Then as I added inks and pens,
My stamp collection grew
So I bought a roomy plastic crate
It would last for years, I knew.

Embossing then became my thing
With powders and a heat gun,
Metallics, tinsels, pearls and clear,
I soon had every one.

By now my lovely plastic crate
Was spilling everywhere
And my glitter glue collection
Lay scattered on a chair.

My husband started muttering
And said things had to stop,
So I bought a huge old wardrobe
At the local charity shop.

But after a while,
I couldn't shut the door
And I put shelves in the spare room
To accomodate yet more.

Our house is now for sale,
Something larger being sought,
By the way, did I show you
The latest stamp I bought ...

Octoberfest 2008

Sounds like a beer festival, doesn't it?! NOT! I attended Octoberfest 2008 at my LSS this past weekend (CAM, link at right) where we made 3 t'riffic projects pictured at left! I'll cover 'em in more detail over the next few days, starting w the Live, Laugh, Love, Learn booklet ...

This was my favorite project, and measures 3-1/2 x 5-3/8". It was simple to make but doesn't look it (I LOVE those types of projects!). The binding was made from a single piece of 3-1/2 x 12" cardstock, scored at 2", then 8 times scored at 1" intervals, leaving 2" at the opposite end. We used a pretty DCS for the covers, a few complementary cardstock colors and an open ended folder die cut for the 4 interior pages, and inserted ready-made tags into those folders (exchanging some pretty ribbon for the usual strings on those tags). We stamped the covers and folder pages with the Live, Laugh, Love, Learn sentiments and a few flower stamps. I'm a chalker so I rounded corners and chalked edges. The hardest part was probably punching thru all those layers of cardstock! I ended up using the Crop-a-dile and taking it a couple pages at a time, aligning the holes as I went. We closed 'em with some pretty ribbon (being careful to not tie 'em too tight, as we still want to be able to open the booklet) ... Voila! Easy peasy! There's still room enough on each of the 4 folder pages and on the tags to be able to add either pics or quotes or a combination of both.

an SC199 wedding

I made this card for a gal I know at work to use for an upcoming wedding she's attending. It's based on SCS's SC199 sketch challenge using its intended recipients' wedding colors and flower (navy and silver, and white roses). I found the flower image on the Internet and printed it on vellum cardstock, then triple matted it on silver rouche (BEAUTIFUL stuff!), then brilliant silver and navy cardstocks, and used dimensionals to pop it and the ribboned piece up a bit. I printed their special song to be used at their wedding ceremony in a dark navy ink as the inside sentiment. Here's wishing the them love, laughter, and happy ever after!

stamps: studio g's flourish; paper: WorldWin's silver rouche, Prism's navy speckled and unknown silver mirror cardstocks, and SU's vellum cardstocks; ink: CTMH's Outdoor Denim; accessories: CTMH's Outdoor Denim organza ribbon, Masterpiece Studio's glitter brads

Boo OCCC!

Two posts in one day, 'cuz the OCC gals struck again w their latest sketch challenge, and my DH wanted a quiet day at home w family for Sweetest Day, so here's another card. Can't seem to quit making those Halloween cards; this time it's both Imaginisce's and Leigh's fault ... Leigh's Freaky Friday challenge #3, to be exact! The multi-layered "Boo" is popped up using some black EK Success pop dots, and I like the look of the EK Success slit punch used upside down for a bat wing effect, don't you? It seems Halloween-ish to me, anywho! Thanx, ladies, for the inspiration!

stamps: MSE's Old World Upper, studio g's Happy Halloween (inside) sentiment; paper: A1's Natural White, Paper Reflections' Black, and SU's Elegant Eggplant, Old Olive, Pumpkin Pie cardstocks, Imaginisce's Hallowhimsy DP; ink: StazOn's Jet Black; accessories: Reminisce's Scary Tactics diecut stickers (jack-o-lantern O's)

twoote sweet!

It's Sweetest Day, and I already had a card for the occasion from my latest QuicKutz Club meeting (thanx, Pat L!) ~ this one's for my DH, along with a little certificate good for a home-made meal of his choosing!

It's also my nephew's b'day and I've sent him an e-greeting. Don't you hate it when this happens? -- I had a card made for him in advance BUT can't seem to locate it! I've a photo box a bit larger than a shoebox with cards already made, but this one seems to be missing in action. I'd pulled it already for the mail ... and where do you suppose it is? Could I have actually mailed it already?! I don't recall ... so the search continues ...

the deets? all materials supplied in advance by my LSS, Capture-a-Memory

nat'l boss day

I made this simple yet elegant card to give to my boss. I adore the Fleuriste line of papers and ribbons from Cosmo Cricket, and also used Bazzill's cardstock that coordinated w Basic Grey's Stella Ruby line (tho' I'm not sure of the colors now) and EK Success circle and scallop punches. I found the below poem a couple years ago and hadn't used it yet; this year I shrunk it down to 8pt size to use inside her card:

The "Lost Dr. Seuss" Poem

I love my job, I love the pay.
I love it more and more each day.
I love my boss; she is the best.
I love her boss and all the rest.

I love my office and its location.
I hate to have to go on vacation.
I love my furniture, drab and gray,
And the paper that piles up every day.

I love my chair in my padded cell.
There‘s nothing else I love so well.
I love to work among my peers.
I love their leers and jeers and sneers.

I love my computer and its software;
I hug it often though it don‘t care.
I love each program and every file,
I try to understand once in a while.

I‘m happy to be here, I am, I am;
I‘m the happiest slave of my Uncle Sam.
I love this work; I love these chores.
I love the meetings with deadly bores.

I love my job - I‘ll say it again.
I even love these friendly men,
These men who‘ve come to visit today
In lovely white coats to take me away.

- anon

happy b'day Lisa!

This card's winging its way to my niece for her birthday (pun intended) ... I love the red, white, black color combination (fyi, this card's white border pops in real life but disappears in my post) and learning new uses of punches, dies and stamp sets. This one used SU's Pick a Petal set to fashion wings, circle or oval punches for the bug's body, and brads for the antenae. Sweet, eh?! Many thanx to Crystal for this idea! Speaking of which, she's got another Christmas Card class coming up soon, and I've gotta sign up still!

stamps: SU's Curvy Verses, Pick a Petal; paper: SU's Basic Black, Real Red, Whisper White; ink: StazOn's Jet Black; accessories: SU's Black Gingham, Real Red grosgrain ribbons, black brads

so thankful for U

This card will be winging it's way to send b'day greetings to my younger brother today. It's his b'day and he's out of town so all's well. I'd picked up this stamp set last weekend for its fall stamps and decided it worked for my brother's b'day too - he's always been there for me and time I need an assist! Looking to card sketches for inspiration last night, this one's based on SplitCoastStampers' SC197 sketch. The DP's from my LSS - I realized that their bag (isn't it pretty?) matched SU's Rich Regals family of cardstocks.

stamps: Autumn Leaves' 'tis the season, SU's Headline Alphabet, studio g' happy b'day sentiment; paper: bag from LSS for DP, SU's Bordering Blue, Night of Navy, Whisper White; ink: CTMH's Outdoor Denim; accessories: CTMH's Outdoor Denim ribbon

rudolf, izzit you?!

This is a Hero Arts version of Rudolf, the red-nosed reindeer, complete w bling for nose! A Hero Arts rep stopped at some stamping stores in Michigan this past week, and one stop was to my LSS, Capture-A-Memory. I ended up supporting the local economy and purchased a few embellishments of theirs, a new line for my LSS ... plus some Autumn Leaves stamps that I hope to ink tomorrow!

We used watercolor pencils during the workshop but I prefer watercoloring with markers or crayons, so I recolored when I got home. He's a cutie! I ended up borrowing the l'il birdie stamp and using him on practically every card, as my Mom loves cardinals ... so one of these is probably bound to head to her house for the holidays!

deets: all Hero Arts unless specified ... stamps: Holly Bird, Jolly Christmas, Joyful Holiday Messages; paper: Winter Mixed Notecards; ink: StazOn Jet Black

Saturday, October 11, 2008

it's official!

Yep ... I've finally started on Christmas cards! This past Thursday I went to a Hero Arts workshop at my LSS where we made 4 cards. This is my fav of those we made; isn't it a cute penguin? And, while I pretty much lean toward muted tones and prefers burgundy/dark green for Christmas colors, I sure do like the crispness and simplicity of this one!

I've a few family birthdays to kick out some cards for so I'll prob'ly be checkin' in again tomorrow! 'Til then, hope your weekend's t'riffic!

stamps: Hero Arts' Jolly Christmas; paper: Holiday Mixed Notecards; ink: StazOn Jet Black, (oops! forgot what green ink!); accessories: red gemstones

repurposed as a card

This card began its life as a really sweet photo album from a workshop I attended last month where the lovely and talented Mary Allen led us in making about a half dozen projects. I decided I'd have much more use for a card rather than a mini album so today I cut it down to size. Too much to do and too little time, so I didn't get any other crafting done today!

stamps: SU's Dreams Du Jour; paper: SU's Bella Rose DP, Chocolate Chip, Riding Hood Red, Whisper White cardstock; ink: StazOn Jet Black, accessories: unknown white ribbon, tools: SU's Scallop Edge punch

sneak peek - cover-alls

I'm geeked about a new product hitting store shelves late September / early October. If you've a Zutter Bind-It-All (and if you've not, isn't this just the product you needed to push you off that fence?!), you've gotta check out the latest edition of scrapping album covers - the Cover-All!

Check out Linda of just-a-scrappin's video demo of this new uber cool product, available in 4 sizes (3x4", 6x6", 5x7", 8x8") and 3 different spine styles (curved, flat, bamboo). I can't wait! (oh ... I guess I've GOT to, don't I?! strike that! I'd not noticed them in my LSS yet ...)

Which is your fav?

Halloween cookies

A few friends and I took a cookie decorating class after work last night and here's the outcome! We each came away with 6 large decorated cookies, a nice apron, decorating bags and tips, recipes, and the remainder of the frosting. Some more cookie decorating may be in the works this weekend w my boys ...

Zehnder's Bakery Decorated Sugar Cookies

Ingredients:
1-1/2 cups butter, softened
2 cups white sugar
4 eggs
1tsp vanilla extract
5 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsps baking powder
1 tsp salt

Directions:
  1. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight).
  2. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Roll out dough on floured surface 1/4 - 1/2" apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
  3. Bake 6-8 minutes in preheated oven. Cool completely.

White Icing

Ingredients:
4 cups confectioners' sugar
1 cup shortening
2 tbls water
1 tsp clear vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine sugar, shortening, water and vanilla. Beat on low speed to combine, then beat on medium speed for a full five minutes. It won't look like icing at first, but keep the mixer going for a full five minutes, and then you're done!
  2. Note: If you're not using this for decorating, but just for icing the cake, thin the icing by adding 3 tbs of corn syrup or water to the icing.

WSC60 re-deux

I made another card using Beate's weekend sketch layout WSC60 ~ same sketch as a couple days ago but switched it to a solid background with printed foreground, tightening up the sketch a bit, and cutting around one of the stamped images.

otherwise, it's the same deets:

happy b'day Jen!

(belated) b'day, that is! I'd picked up this cutie patootie princess sample from Crystal quite a while ago and intended to use it on a b'day card for my niece as my sis' often calls her "Princess." Well, my Mom used to tell me that "the road to Hell is filled with good intentions" ... and for good reason ... Jenn's b'day snuck up on me this year and I just put the card in the mail this afternoon.

The trading card princess I rec'd was already double-matted so that pretty much determined the colors for my card, and it's based on Mary Jo's Monday Lunchtime Sketch Challenge #38 turned on its side. The castle's stamped twice (on Almost Amethyst and Whisper White), then the clouds and flags cut out and glued onto the Almost Amethyst base. Lemee tell ya, those flags were pretty tough to cut out! The card's 5x7" which is out of my usual comfort zone ~ why do you suppose large cards seem tougher to me?!

stamps: unknown castle, CTMH's Treasure life, Snag'em Stamps' carriage, SU's Birthday Beauty, studio g inside sentiments; paper: SU's Almost Amethyst, Pretty in Pink, Regal Rose, Rose Red, Whisper White cardstocks; ink: StazOn's Jet Black, Versamark; accessories: SU's Dazzling Diamonds glitter

you've cast a spell on me ...

Remember the song from the '93 Halloween movie, Hocus Pocus? I had to look it up on imdb.com after using this stamp for my DH's card. I picked up a DP share of those in the current catty and used some of the Ghostly Greetings pack on this one, made using Beate's weekend sketch #60.

stamps: studio g, Technique Tuesday's Borderline: Holidays; paper: Paper Paradise's black cardstock, SU's Ghostly Greetings DP, Old Olive & Pumpkin Pie cardstocks; ink: StazOn's Jet Black

H'ween make-'n-take

Another Halloween card, this one made at a make-'n-take at my fav LSS. The letters and spider were die cut shapes, and the googly eyes add just the right touch, don't you think?!

no deets to report so this is a super quick post! good thing, 'cuz I'm about ready to drop! g'nite!

WCMD QuicKutz Club

I've really liked the various Frankenstein cards I've seen on the Web. Today the lovely and talented Pat L led us (us being the Saturday crew in our local QuicKutz Club - we've grown too large to all meet on one day so we now meet the first Friday/Saturday monthly) in the making of this cute basket.

It's just one piece of 12x12 cardstock, 1) scored at 3" and 9" in one direction, 2) scored at 4-1/2" and 7-1/2" in the other direction. You then line up the outer corners' scored points and crease the resulting fold outside of the "box," fold those toward the 3" section of the box, pierce thru all 3 thicknesses and insert a brad to hold the sides together. The hair is a QuicKutz die originally intended to be grass. Voila! Easy peasy!

I came home and made the matching card. The inside reads "Friend. Good. - Frankenstein," a quote from one of SU's stamp sets.

card deets follow - stamps: n/a; paper: Paper Reflections' black cardstock, Prism's Parakeet bright green cardstock; ink: PC-generated greeting and Sakura pigma calipen for mouths; accessories: Darice's 10mm googly eyes (sigh ... the larger of the two I'd picked up and I still should've purchased larger, eh?! ... back to the store I go again!)

World Card Making Day

Happy World Card Making Day, folkes! Visit the site to learn more about the holiday, be inspired, or upload your card creations!

... and what a t'riffic way to start my morning ~ I was up early checking blogs before heading to my fav LSS for a QuicKutz Club meeting and read that I'd won one of the latest PaperCrafts specialty issues, Cards, Gifts, & More: Paper Crafting 3 Ways from Angela of Angela Sgro Designs' blog! Whoo hoo! Thanx again, Angela!

sketch challenges

Mel of Mel Stampz periodically runs lists of links - always interesting reads! She's one of my fav enablers in this way! Well, for whatever reason, a list of links dated Dec 2006 recently reappeared as a recent entry on my Google Reader. This one's Challenge Links! Whoo hoo! I love a challenge - don't you?! TFS Mel!

ghouls rule!

You remember those cards that, when tilted, change pictures? Well, I picked up a package of Halloween ones at Meijer's the other day to use as party favors at a staff luncheon. I had some left over, so HAD to make a card using them, right?! This is pretty much a stretched out version of SCS' SC196 sketch challenge.

stamps: studio g; paper: Reminisce's Verbal Creep DP, Paper Reflections' black and SU's Lovely Lilac, Only Orange, Real Red, YoYo Yellow cardstocks; ink: StazOn Jet Black; accessories: SU's tab punch and orange eyelets from an eyelet share
