On this day in 1859, Jean-François Gravelet, known as The Great Blondin, crossed Niagara Falls on a tightrope that was 1,100 feet long and 160 feet above the water.
For an interesting read on his exploits, read this Associated Content article (here); my favorite story was of his trip across the falls carrying a barber who shaved him while he crossed (I'm off to see if I can find documentation on that one!)!
